Need math help with binoviewer plz

Posted By Guy Earle

Okay, I've been looking at this in my free time today and I've figured this much out (sorry, I purchased some of this three years ago, and I had to put astronomy aside for the past two years, so I forgot some things): I have the 1.2X OCS, which gives my dual-arm 1.2/1.8/2.3X magnifications when the OCS is in the closed configuration, which it is.

I remember Russ saying that when you have to extend the OCS to achieve focus, you are increasing the magnification. With that in mind, does the 1/2" space the single-arm takes up increase magnification?

Now, if that's right, then the single-arm, if I was not using the dual, would yield 1.2X and 2.5X magnification. However, that figure on his website is using the 1.4X OCS optical cell; with the 1.2X cell, I should be getting 1.1X and 2.3X for the single-arm switch.

Here's where I'm still fuzzing: I should be taking the 1.2/1.8/and 2.3X and multiplying by 1.1 and 2.3 to get the two different ratios? That would mean, with the single-arm switch NOT engaged, I would still have 1.3X/2X/2.5X using the dual-arm.

With the single-arm engaged, I would have 3X/4.6X/5.8X magnifications.

To clarify, normally the dual gives 1.2/1.8 and 2.3X With the single arm attachment, those figures jump to 1.3/2/ and 2.5X and when the single arm is used, the second set of magnifications is 3/4.6/and 5.8X If that's so, then my calculations are way off for what I've been using.

Lastly, applying this data to my set of 24.5mm SWA's I get the following (16" f/4.52):
Dual-Arm only: 98X/150X/187X
Single-Arm only: 224X/347X/437X

The numbers seem to look what I'd imagine them to be, especially for the dual numbers. I know that the max setting on the dual is roughly what the lowest is on the combined view, I just didn't think the numbers went that high at 437X. It would explain why I hardly ever view at that setting though....

Please, someone give my numbers a check and see if I've made errors or not. Thanks!

Methinks you will realize that you let a Pandora out of that box, and your eyepiece collection might start growing more...lol

Nice!!! Thanks for this list. What scope are you judging these by, an 18"? Would you mind posting for other months in the future?

12V Battery recommendation?

Posted By Guy Earle

JB,

My 14amphr battery died recently, and i had it on the charger all day to no avail. So, I made the most of it, keeping it plugged in all night. I was just aware of where i was rotating in azimuth, so I didn't wrap the cord around the base. Of course, you have to have power....

Simply amazing shots...the clarity on the moon's transit is just as crisp as can be. Excellent work.
