I experienced a more severe version of this 'odd' star test once, in a refractor in which one of the lens elements was in 'backwards' the result being that spacing between the two elements was wider at the center than it was at the edge. Reversing one of the elements fixed the problem.

It's killing me seeing this one up for sale again. As an avid fan of slow planet-killer newtonians, this thing is a dream -- I'd buy it in a second but I'd need to get a parachute to wear in case I fell off the ladder while observing.

I, and I think many Astromarters, prefer this 3-step process:

1) Buy something that looks/sounds really cool
2) Play with it for a year or two
3) Sell it & return to step (1)

The view from the northern U.S.

The view of Mars from up here in MN has not been great, to say the least, the air has been humid and turbulent, Mars is pretty low in the sky at its highest -- and my drawings are not great, either, I'm no Sol Robbins or anything :-) and I'm just getting my 'Mars legs' back for observing but this is the first night I've been out here that the seeing has not completely sucked and I was up all night so I'm posting :-D

Definitely seeing that western limb haze. Also glimpsing some much finer granularity at the most briefest moments of steadiness in the dark southern hemisphere regions, unfortunately far to brief for me to draw (we're talking fractions of a second).

Bloody and Bruised Bond Market

This thing is coming off the rails. The 10-year bond yield is up over 100 basis points from a MONTH ago and it doesn't even look like it's slowing down. I don't remember the yields ever jolting this high this fast. The possibility of economic recovery, combined with the ugly prospect of the government being back in bond-selling mode for the forseeable future and the inherent bond market pressure that causes are possible reasons.

Looks like a good company overall with a reasonable stock valuation, but this is already a multi-billion dollar company. A single product, however great it is, is not going to cause the stock of a company this massive to triple overnight or anything.

Another attempt drawing 7/23/03

Drew this at 3:00am last night/this morning. Interesting how more "stuff" becomes visible after looking a while though I'm sure increasing distance from the horizon was a factor. Drawing getting a *little* easier though had to do this one twice to get the positions & proportions better, still maybe not quite right. Need more practice!
