Is the AM server still trying to find its way? I can click on 3 or 4 forum posts, then everything hangs up, "waiting for Astromart".

Anyone else, or is it just me?

Thanksgiving Eve

To accommodate the other parts of the families of our young married couples, my family had our Thanksgiving dinner last night. At about ten minutes 'till seven with everyone finished eating, we all got up and went outside into the crisp, clear November evening to watch the ISS and Atlantis glide silently up from the western sky. As the two craft approached the zenith, their brilliant light turned ruddy red, then faded away as they entered Earth's shadow. Then we all, ages 6 to 81, went back inside and ate some pie!

Three images from December

Old standbys, mostly. These were taken through a homemade 6" f/4 Newt (Coulter mirrors, ca 1975), a Baader coma corrector, and a modified Nikon D50. Guided with a SBIG-ST4 on the Jason-Empire refractor OTA that I got for my birthday when I turned 15! All are stacks of 6 minute subs, ISO 1600. Darks, flats, offset, and stacking with DSS, finished with CS3.

First is M45, 7 x 6 min

Another Horse

Here is my attempt taken Tuesday this week. 20 x 6 min, ISO 1600 through an Orion 8" f/4.9 OTA with a modified Nikon D50. I had some residual amp glow in the upper left corner that I tried to remove with a layer mask, and in the process may have created some new features for this object. Thanks for looking, comments are welcomed!

Taken last Sunday. 16 x 6 min, ISO 1600. Modified Nikon D50 through 8" f/4.9 OTA. I took the stack from DSS into CS3, and when converting it to 16 bit I chose "Equalize Histogram" as the method. The result looked almost B&W. I cranked up the saturation, and this is the result. I applied a high-pass filter to parts of the image to bring out the dust detail.

Seven Sisters go to California

Well, not really. I tried an old manual Vivitar zoom 70-210 on my D50 during my last outing. Not a great lens for AP, I've decided. Anyway, here is a wide view (@70mm) of the Pleiades and the California Nebula with that old lens. 20 x 6 minutes, ISO 1600. I was hoping to get more of the dust in this area, but would have needed darker skies and a lot more time. And a good lens!

Last Night's Moon with ED80

Taken with a Nikon D70, at prime focus of a newly acquired, pretty old ED80. It was used as a guidescope on a 16" scope at a university observatory. I am very pleased with the optics. What a value! The moon image is a (manual) stack of 8 frames, processed with CS3. I may have pushed the sharpening a little far. Thanks for looking, comments welcome.

Same as the other, but 24 hrs later. This one is 17 frames, Registax then CS3.
