I live in Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay. We're having an incredible winter with most areas now over 70" on snow (the normal is 15-20") Most of the days since Dec 1 have been below to well below normal in temps too. Our 3rd blizzard this season ended last night. I said to my wife "I bet it doesn't take long for someone to blame it on global warming." I was right, it didn't. I wonder if the writer was smiling when he wrote it or did he keep a straight face.

Mars 3-16-10

The winter in the DC area was lousy. I didn't get the scope out in Dec, Jan, and Feb. I pretty much missed all of Mars. Last night the seeing was pretty good so I gave it a shot.

This was shot with a Celestron CPC 1100 and a Celestron Neximage. It's a stack of 400 frames. Mars was 10.5".

Questions about Imaging Source Cameras

I'm considering purchasing a DFK31AU03.AS camera. In addition to using it with my telescope I would also like to use with some optical microscopes at my lab.

Do Imaging Source cameras come with the 1.25" nosepiece?
Can I get different diameter nosepieces for this camera? If so, where?

I'm specifically looking for a 23mm outer diameter nosepiece.

I read this today. According to the article there have been other pitchers who could do this. This is the first time I had ever heard of one though. It will be interesting to see how this guy does in the majors.

Arctic Sea Ice Maximum Extent

The Arctic has still not reached its maximum extent for the year. It usually does this in mid March. Of course one year is meaningless but I found it interesting when combined with the Antarctic recorvery from minumum 2 weeks early than average this year.

First Saturn of the Year

Shot using a C11 at ~f/20 with Celestron Neximage camera. This is a stack of 500 frames. You can see Tethys on the right side just under the rings. Seeing was about 3.5 to 4/5.

Mars 4-1-10

When I shot Mars on 4-1 the seeing was marginal. It got better later when I shot Saturn but by then Mars was to low. It's getting smaller fast too.
