BIG DOB VS AN APO

Posted By victor truglio

I AM ABOUT 4 MONTHS INTO THE HOBBY AND HAVE GONE FROM A 3 INCH MEADE DS 2000 REFRACTOR, TO AN XT8I ORION, TO NOW A XT10I ORION.
I LIVE IN STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK WHERE LIGHT POLUTION IS A PROBLEM
I DONT HAVE MUCH TO COMPARE WITH WHAT I HAVE SEEN, BUT
OTHER THEN LOOKING AT THE MOON, THE SEVEN SISTERS, AND MAYBE THE WILD DUCK CLUSTER SATURN HAS LOOKED UNIMPRESSIVE, VERY WAVEY, AND MOST OF THE NEBULAS HAVE BEEN DIM SMUDGES.
I DONT KNOW IF MY EXPECTATION LEVEL IS TOO HIGH OR NOT
I KEEP BEING TOLD THAT APERTURE IS EVERYTHING AND THE MOST IMPORTANT.
BUT WHY DO PEOPLE SPEND 3X THE MONEY ON THESE APO TYPE REFRACTORS.
THERE IS SOMETHING VERY APPEALING ABOUT THEM TO ME.
HOW WOULD A 4" OR MAYBE 5" APO COMPARE TO MY XT10I?
I KNOW THEY ARE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE.
TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION WHERE I LIVE , OF COARSE. AM I CRAZY
I WOULD RATHER SEE LESS, BUT WHAT I SEE BE GREAT THEN SEE MORE AND WHAT I SEE BE SOSO.
HELP

what size apo

Posted By victor truglio

i currently have an orion xt10i which i enjoy but have been giving more and more thought to purchasing an apo/type to go along with my dob
the sizes i have been looking at range from 80mm to about 110mm, based on the price range factor.
the 80mm, depending on brand are in the $600 price range for the tube only and the 102-110mm i been looking at go up to about $2,000.
there seems to be alot of so called apo's out there right now for around $1,000 in the 4 inch range.
is there a best size for the dollar
and is there a big difference in doublet vs triplet?
thanks for your help
ps i also understand that with these i will of course need a tripod, diag, finder scope.

was size dob for light pol. suburb

Posted By victor truglio

i currently have a 10 lightbridge. i had an orion 8 and and orion intel 10 first.
i have noticed a small difference between the 8 and the 2 10's i have owned. mostly in some contrast and brightness
would a 12 or even a 16 give me an even better image or am i up against not having dark enough skies and maybe even some seeing issues, turbulence, etc.
i am located in a new york suburb.
i have only had my 10 lightbridge for a short time so i can return it for a full store credit and get a 12 or maybe 16 or keep whay i have.???

EQ. MOUNTS

Posted By victor truglio

I HAVE AN ORION SKYVIEW PRO MOUNT WHICH I HAVE BEEN USING
FOR MY ASTRO-TECH 102 REFRACTOR AND IS HAS BEEN MORE
THEN FINE.
I RECENTLY PURCHASED A CELESTRON 9.25 SCT WHICH WEIGHS 20LBS
THE EQ MOUNT IS RATED @ A 20LB LOAD.
BUT WITH THE EYEPIECE, FOCUSER, AND DIAG., THINGS ARE
A LITTLE SHAKING FOR VIEWING.
I PURCHASED SOME DAMPENING PADS, BUT I HAVE NOT GOT A CHANCE
TO TRY THEM YET.
SHOULD I SELL THIS MOUNT AND GO FOR SOMETHING HEAVYER
THE CELESTRON CG5 IS RATED AT 35LBS FOR $699 GOTO
THE ORION SERIUS IS RATED AT 30LBS FOR $1,195
CAN THE CELESTRON CG5 BE THAT GOOD AND HALF THE PRICE??
CURRENTLY WITH CERTAIN EYEPIECES AT CERTAIN MAGNIFCATIONS, DAMPENING TAKES 3-5 SECONDS EVERY TIME I FOCUS.

I PULLED THE TRIGGER

Posted By victor truglio

I MADE THE SWITCH. MY C9.25 WITH ASGT FOR THE 12.5 TEETER
DOB. I MET A FELLOW ASTROMARTER AT THE AGREED UPON HALF WAY
POINT. AT FIRST GLANCE OF THE TEETER DOB I WAS DIS-APPOINTED IN THE OVERALL CONDITION OF THE SCOPE.
IT APPEARED FUNCTIONALLY IN GOOD SHAPE WITH NO MAJOR
REPAIRS NEEDED BUT ITS PHYSICAL APPEARANCE NEEDED AN
UPDATING. MY SCOPE, MY TRADE, WAS IN ABSOLUTE PERFECT
PHYSICAL AND FUNCTIONAL CONDITION AND I FELT I WAS GETTING THE SHORT END OF THE STICK. SO, I RE-NEGOTIONATED ON THE SPOT FOR ENOUGH CASH, (GOTTA LOVE THOSE ATM'S) TO RE-DUE WHAT I FELT WAS NEEDED ALONG WITH A NEW FOCUSER, NEW FINDER, AND RE-COATED PRIMARY.
I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON THE SCOPE AND WILL SEND BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES WHEN ITS COMPLETED.
CANT WAIT TO GET IT UNDER THE STARS.

CPC800 OR CPC1100

Posted By victor truglio

IF YOU HAD A CHOICE BETWEEN THE CPC800 AND THE CPC1100
WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE.
SCOPE WILL NOT BE USED FOR PHOTOGRAPHY, NOT NOW ANYWAY
IT WILL BE USED FOR DEEP SKY AND PLANETARY
MY OTHER SCOPES ARE A SMALL REFRACTOR AND A 12.5 DOB.
ALSO TO THROUGHT IN THE MIX, I MIGHT BE SELLING THE DOB.
THE DEAL IS EITHER FOR A NEW CPC800 OR I CAN GET A DEMO CPC1100 FOR NEAR THE SAME PRICE.
