Not So Far-Fetched Sci-Fi

In keeping with the intent of this forum I would like to start a new thread:

Of all the science fiction you have read, what themes or story lines have you discovered that seemed most likely to be realistic possibilities in the next, say, 100 years? There are some novels out there that may appear grand in nature but may not be all that far fetched in feasibility.

Lucifer's Hammer by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven.

Read it years ago and while there are other asteriod/comet hitting the Earth novels, most notably Hammer of the Gods by Arthur C. Clarke and at least two really bad movies, LH read like it could happen tomorrow. It mostly dealt with the aftermath of the impact and how the survivors carried on.

Now that I think about it, Hammer of the Gods was pretty plausible, too, but takes place at least 100 years into the future.

Michael Crichton's 'Prey', with grey-goo nanotech monsters that eat you alive as they replace your tissues, intelligent tornadoes that roam the landscape. Dunno about bacteria plus tech composition, but I think at some point in the next 100 years there will be a really nasty accident involving more complex nanotech than we have now. Maybe something more like the Stargate 'replicators', but who can say.

I have recently been playing (just completed, and started again), the XBox 360 title, "Mass Effect".
It is far fetched, but about the only way I will get to experience space travel in my lifetime.
I am having a blast!
