Hi out there!

I hope this isn't a "dumb" question, but does anyone have a technique for observing through their refractor ( I have a 120mm equatorially mounted) that doesn't entail being on one's hands and knees on frosty grass to observe objects towards the zenith?

Thanks, allan

Allan,
You might be able to get a mini-pier extension that raises the eq head up somewhat above the tripod. Orion sells these (see http://www.telescope.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=38087&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=6&iSubCat=24&iProductID=38087 ), as does Vixen and likely some other companies too. This will help a lot!
