IC 2177 Gum Nebula

original scan.
Same exposure as the Rosette Neb.

Looks good considering the conditions, but it's only going to get worse! :C
I should have held on to my LPS filter and let you borrow it.

Here is an attempt to process the vignetting and blue sky out.

Hi August,

Nice image, but I am not so sure about your name for it. The object usually refered to as the Gum Nebula is Gum 15, the Vela supernova remnant. This is situated nearly 40 degrees south-east of IC 2177. (sometimes called the "seagull nebula")

Colin Gum worked at Mt Stromlo observatory in Australia during the 1950's, and made an extensive study of southern nebulae. The objects listed in his catalogue were new discoveries that he made. I have been unable to find any reference to IC 2177 in his catalogue and would be very doubtful that he would have listed such a well known object as one of his objects.
