I have been looking at various timers and battery packs or combos for my Canon 50D. Looks like there are several options that might be much cheaper than Canon brand. (e.g. TR-A from Satechi,) Any comments on what is out there? Anything I am totally forgetting or should avoid? Any battery packs that use D cells? or adapters for 12V lead acid?

Thanks,
Charlie

You could take a look at the Cercis Astro stuff for the Canon DSLR. The 12V DC adapter works very well with a 12V battery. Much better than buying individual Canon batteries that die quickly in the cold.
Good luck,
