The origin of the 'moral compass' is, and always has been, the necessity of being able to function in a society. We have organized things to the extent that we are nearly helpless as lone individuals.
While you are free to do so, generally the groundless 'if it feels good do it' approach gets you nowhere. Every society has its deviants, and while there are exceptions those whose moral compass is deviant generally find themselves eliminated from participation in the society. Those whose moral compass is sound and intact generally realize that their actions for the betterment of the society also generally serve to better themselves.
