Leading Atheist Wavering?

Antony Flew, longtime promoter of Atheism, at age 81 seems to be becoming possibly a sort of soft, non-specific deist. But the jury is still out, it sounds like he is still reviewing his position. Still does not believe specifically in the Christian/Islamic god per se and certainly does not believe in the afterlife.

i had a great-uncle who was a Sergeant Major in the British army. He served many years in India during the Raj... we're talking 1890's here...

Much to the dismay of his Roman Catholic family (Scots R.C.s i'll add -talk about an oppressed minority!) he returned home to Stirling an atheist and held that view -at least around the family- until he was on his deathbed, whence he returned to the Faith...

Was he hedging his bets? Did he have a Revelation? Was he a coward? (Well IMO, he was no coward in any conventional sense.)

i have no way of knowing, but sometimes i think -given the general puckish bent of my kin that still runs strong among us- i really do think that he was just having everyone on about his atheism just to niggle them.
