I was once told that lottery tickets are a tax for the non-mathematically inclined. Despite this, I still buy one every once in a while - but only if the jackpot is over 100 million.

I wouldn't call it a tax if no one is twisting my arm to buy them. I know my chance of winning is practically nil, but it's still fun to play, so long as I'm not using the mortgage money to buy them.

I play once the odds of winning are equal to the amount of money I would win: approximately $50 million (pre-tax and without factoring in the PV of the winnings)

The odds of winning any particular lottery are less than the odds of getting called to pick up an AP1200 - so i play the lottery. wink
