Has the sun set on the American Empire?
Maybe for today, but as little orphan Annie once cried, "The sun'll come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorroooooow, they'll be sunnnn."
In addition, it's a little disingenuous for those who claim China as an example of the next world superpower without qualifying it by saying that they cannot even feed half their population and contribute virtually nothing in the way of technological advancement in the world. Sure, they make everything we buy, but just how long do you think it'll be before its population either starves or revolts (or both) en masse? Most of us remember how China sees fit to put down rebellion and that will not go over very well woth the rest of the world today. Yes, they can send men to space and perform spacewalks, but can they expect to do it for long if the backbone of their labor force---people---are either starving or in prison?
As well, those nations that are making a fortune on oil profits can only do so for a limited amount of time (until the oil runs out or no one can afford it anymore).
The United States has recovered from worse days than these and gotten stronger in the long run because we have adapted to the situations that got us their in the first place. I have no doubt we'll recover from this too.
