Nothing ironic about it, it's a Secret Service requirement and has been for many many years. Nobody gets near the president without first undergoing a background check. This is standard procedure regardless of who holds the office.

I agree that there's nothing unusual about this Secret Service procedure. However, in this case, it's not the students who have requested a meeting with Obama. Rather it's the other way around--Obama is the one forcing his presence upon the students. I'm guessing that if a student refused the background check that they would not be allowed to graduate on stage with their class?

What presidents hasn't done this kind of thing? They've been visiting schools, the workplace, cafeterias, you name it for as long as TV existed. In this case if a student refuses a background check he might be denied access to the president. I suspect that the Secret Service will run everyone through a metal detector and pay axtra attention to anyone who refuses the background check and life will go on.

This is just typical politics - when repubican presidents do this sort of thing, dems cry foul. This is the same. Only different.
