We are not the first, we won't be the last on this planet. The dinosaurs probably didn't cheer for astroids either but like us, when they figured out something bad was happening, it was to late.Jim Babcock said:

We can try and stop it, but the current evidence suggests that we might be in a feedback loop. ie, Co2 locked up in permafrost being released as the Siberian tundra permafrost melts for the first time in thousands (tens of thousands?) of years.The same thing is occurring in the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps,there is Co2 trapped in the ice. Or, it was trapped until the ice melted.
I think our suvival strategy should include ways to adapt, not just ways to slow or stop Global Warming. Unfortunately, alot of people have there heads in the sand on this issue, so we might never have a chance.
