Has anyone tried a UHC filter on Mars? I tried it a few weeks ago and I was pretty impressed how it brought out low contrast details.

I tried mine on my NS11 a few times over the past couple of weeks, and while I did see an improvement in contrast (as compared to a medium orange filter or a #23 red) I also experienced severe chromatic aberrations. A greenish arc above Mars and a reddish arc below it.
Mars was about 25 degrees above the horizon during those attempts. I'll try it again at the next observing session and see if it improves with altitude.

I've tried an Orion UltraBlock but didn't care for the effect that much. The same for the O-III filter, although I did prefer it to the UltraBlock. However, a narrowband filter such as the Orion Skyglow or the Lumicon Deepsky works quite well as a Mars filter. Recently I've heard that a H-beta filter is very effective too.
On Friday night I observed Mars using the 17" f1/5 classical Cassegrain at the Naylor Observatory. One of the best views I had that session was with a Skyglow stacked with a Wratten #30 (a Vernonscope CC30M).

Well Vincent, I finally tried both my UHC and O-III filter on Mars this morning with my 4" TV-102 APO. Red arc on the preceding rim and green arc in the following rim. But what I noticed was while both filters did enhance the contrast (with the O-III being the darker of the two) using both my 4mm and 5mm TMB SuperMono eyepieces, the albedo were much sharper and "edged in" with my #23 orange filter! BTW, the seeing was very good, Antonaidi II and Mars was at 45d above horizon; so there's no atmospheric affect.
