In about ten days I'm heading up to Yosemite Park for a little vacation. Should be a fun time had by all.

I will be taking my Nexstar 8 with me and will be observing from Glacier Point (7300 ft). Can anyone tell me which directions I'll be able to observe and photograph (i.e., E,NE,S, etc.)?

I was hoping to get good views of the S,SW skies and focus on the globulars and M8, M20, etc.

Clear Skies,

Hey David,
I have been to Yosemite many times but not since I've taken up astronomy. (cause and effect?) From Glacier Point most of the visible sky is to the north, the northwest and the east/northeast. The mountains and forest rise up behind you blocking the southerly views.
A better place to view the glorius southern skies would be Toulomne Meadows, which at over 10,000 feet, is much more consistently open to the horizon in all directions. Toward the east end of the Meadows, in the vicinity of Lambert Dome (?), you should be able to see up over the beautiful Cathedral Range. Lyell Canyon might provide a good viewpoint. It is a long broad valley facing due south. Have fun!
I'm looking for a TV-60 to stuff in my pack the next time I go backpacking up there. Can't exactly drag the Starmaster along. wink
