I do believe that aperture is main factor for average person to see the colors. But it complitely controversial to teory. Or some point is missing.

Russ, IMHO it is a combination of multiple variables the ones that would allow you to SEE color in M42...

Excellent Steady Skies
Transparency
Dark Adapted eyes
Viewing comfort (like the one given by binoviewers)(or using an eye-patch)
Scope Aperture

To all this add that every person is different, and some could be more color-sensitive than others, and that could very well explain why some see colors and some don't...

Don't worry if THEY don't believe it... you are lucky to be able to see them, enjoy them! wink

Clear skies all!

In my 20" I see abundant pink in M42 and its not subtle, but jumps out more in transparent skies. I cant vouch for light polluted conditions because i only set up the 20" in mag 6 or better skies. I have also seen the green hue of Saturns SPR this year on nights of good seeing, also in the 20" scope. Now here's one for you............has anyone of you seen blue in M51? Russ, that should start a debate on the Russian forums.
