Does anyone know of a book or catalogue listing eg the top 50 NGC galaxies in terms of surface brightness?

Thanks.........Mike

Mike--
Check out the link below--you could use it to generate a list of "bright" galaxies pretty quickly. Selecting Ursa Major or Canes Venatici, for example, yields a short list of galaxies by ngc number; the galaxies with SB under 13 are highlighted. As you check out some of the entries, you'll notice that M81 and M106 don't even make the cut. So that argues against surface brightness alone as a determining factor for selecting targets. Also be advised the surface brightness estimates in the link below often differ markedly from those in the Night Sky Observer's Guide. When I want to look at something bright, I go through that book and list those targets in a given constellation that the authors have given four stars or more.
