I want to add a finderscope mount for my zero power red dot finder, to compliment a 8X50 finder, to my 8" dobsonian. This seems simple enough, I own a drill. My only concerns are alignment and scrap from the drill getting down the ota, even if I turn it upside down. Is there some easy way for assuring the two are aimed straight down the OTA, as well as keeping my primary clean? Also, is there a preferred position for a second finder? If I'm making this too difficult for myself, please tell me. Thanks.
Finderscope mounting

Hi:
I wouldn't worry too much about the metal getting into things. Even if it does, it's not a serious problem and can just be dusted off.
When I drill in an OTA, I put some paper towels loosely in the tube to block any particles that might find their way in. One I am done, I wipe the inside of the OTA. Another technique is to use Vasoline or grease on the back side so that it catches any metal but then you have to clean the grease off...
As far as location, I like both finders near each other. Since both probably use the same mount you may want to switch them...
Another thought: Drilling holes is somewhat permenent. You might want to attach the finder mount to a relatively thin piece of wood and then just use double sided sticky tape to try different positions. Of course the tape can be difficult to remove, particularly if it sits around a few years... Indeed, Telrads are normally mounted with double-sided sticky tape.
