titled component design for reflector

The January 1993 issue of AStronomy magazine (p.28) features a ATM reflector with an elliptical secondary off-center and a 6" primary with extreme tilt, aimed at the secondary. The secondary, of course, reflects to a normal focuser with EP.

This "titled component" design eliminates the central obstruction, boosting contrast and resolution.

The guy who built the scope was Craig Englehorn.

Has anybody ever heard more about such a design?

There are a variety of off axis reflectors. The short story is they are complicated to make and the loss of contrast due to a reasonably sized secondary is essentially zero.

That's an unobstructed Newtonian. Designed by Jose Sasian. The secondary is a round mirror. I own the one pictured with Sasian. It's in pieces out in my garage. A project I won't live long enough to get back to.
