I have a 6" f10 mirror that I was going to try to silver
rather than have aluminiumised (difficult in aust).
Has anyone tried doing it ?
It will be a throw together planetary scope.

A high school student in our club silvered a mirror so he could have it done in time for Stellafane, the telescope maker's convention. It worked well for him, so I suspect you can do it to. Be careful, though.

In Australia it is not as simple as sending a mirror away for a few days to be Al coated. I handle chemicals often with my job.
Idea,...I sometimes repair the Al sputtering machines that Al coat CD's,so I thought of removing the spindle from the 8" vaccume tank, putting the 6" mirror in,a trace of argon then give it a sputter of Al.
I would have to watch the coat thickness but I can measure the reflectance and scatter to get it right.
I can try several times, just re strip the mirror if it comes out with a poor reflectance reading.
