Tak FS60C vs Pronto vs Williams Megrez 80 ?

Hi,

I am trying to find a high quality, somewhat reasonably priced, airline portable scope/ Holy Grail. I realize that this is a well worn path. I have hit all of the scope review sites but am looking for some biased opinions. Any out there :-)

I used to have a Pronto but unfortunately sold it , so for comparison I am aware of it's qualities. I am trying to decide between the Williams 80 and the Tak 60. Both are really well made. The Tak probably has better optics but is more expensive and has a small aperture. The Williams is larger, comes with many more accessories but mostly I hear glowing reports of it's build quality and not it's optics... sort of damming by faint praise.

Anyone have input here? BTW. This is my only scope, I live in a light poluted area when not traveling, and I enjoy wide views.

Best,

Paul

Hi Paul,

"D" None of the above. ;-)

How about the Orion ED or a SV 80mm f9?

Hi All,

I was out of town this weekend and returned to find many good tips. Thanks. Well.. I ruled out the Williams Megrez 80. It is beautiful, incredibly well made, comes with all kinds of ammenities, but seems to have only passable optics. I would put it just past and ST80 but well behind my old Pronto. I did look around for a Borg 76ED a couple of weeks ago but between the build-your-own approach to ordering one and trouble finding one in stock I sort of bailed out. It was actually my first choice when I began. Currently I am evaluating a TAK FS60-C which I like very much. It is very sharp, with a really pleasing quality to the view. It has a bit of that "Ah" quality going for it which I suppose the stars should actually take credit for :-) The downside is the tiny aperture but at 14" long and 3 pounds it is a wonderful travel scope. It also works well on my Kirk BH-3 photographic ballhead which means another thing I do not need to buy.

Thanks again for the input, great thread...

Paul
