refractor suggestions

Hi all,

I have a problem. I just received an email from the mother of a former student who will be graduating as an astronomy major in May and wants to get him a telescope as a graduation present. I know he has been having fun up at mecca (AKA Mauna Kea.... lucky $#$#@$# studying at UH!) using the refractor at the visitor's centre for astrophotography, so my thoughts would be for a compact refractor, about 4". Only one problem... the mother is wanting to keep the cost down to around $1000 - $1500, and from looking around here, a reasonable 4" plus mount would be well over $2000. :-(

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers,

Maurice

A refractor may not be the best choice for someone who will probably be moving around and doesn't want or need the burden of dragging around a lot of stuff. IMO a 6" SCT might be a better scope and it will easily fit her budget and his suitcase.
