Any opinions? I've seen comments on the Orion but virtually nothing on the Meade. How do they stack up to each other?

James:
I feel the Meade 102ED would be, in my opinion, the better quality scope. I had a Meade 127ED and it was a wonderful scope and essentially colorfree. The Meade 102ED would have been made in America as opposed to China. Quality of materials and workmanship should be superior.

I have never seen or tried the Meade ED in person but I have tested the Skywatcher 100ED (identical to Orion's. Only in different tube color)
Build quality is no televue or William Optics or Stellarvue but it's a step (or two) above the typical Chinese refractors. The focuser is okay but I bit on the loose side (to me). The lens cell is a nicely machined aluminum.
Optically it's pretty good. I don't detect any violet halo on moon. I look at Saturn at 200X , Jupiter at around 150X and the images are very sharp and contrasty. Saturn looks 3D. On Jupiter the shadow of the moons are easily be seen on the planet's surface.
