Jupiter in Eon 120 daylight shadow transit

Hi,
I can only get planets and a few dso's from my light poisoned city but I did get what I think was a shadow transit during daylight today (6:10 P.M.) just after sunset but still plenty bright outside. Using a Meade 5.5 series 5000 for 163x ( I didn't try for lower mags) I caught what I think was a shadow transit. The moon had already passed the planet and was just separated but the shadow was there. At first I thought it was a swirl in the band but as it got darker it sure as heck looked to me like a little black circle. The darker it got the clearer it was but as I didn't look at a moon transit calculator I don't want to sound like an idiot and say that I saw it and it turns out that the moon was occulted by the planet so no shadow could've been seen.
Anyhow I love this Eon and hope to get to darker skies one day soon.

Itz: According to Astromist (running on a Sony Clie Handheld), Io's transit of Jupiter finished at about 6pm EST and it's shadow was just about half way across Jupiter. I think this is what you observed.

I have two programs that are capable of displaying shadow transits, Astromist and Jup, both run on the Palm OS... I love shadow transits, so sometime during the day I will fire up the Clie and look to see what is in store for the evening. THere must be programs that run on desktops that do this???

The smallest scope I have observed a shadow transit with is my 60mm F/13.3 Asahi-Pentax. It seems the bigger the scope, the better the contrast so in a 12.5 inch or so, the shadow is so dark and black, it almost looks like it was painted on.

Good job

Hi there, I had my 90mm f/5.5 asrotech ED out last night around 6:30 and saw what I also thought may have been a transit. I was using a 5mm nagler which gave me about 100x. Thanks for the confirmation.

Regards,

Mark
