Deciding on a First Scope

I am having a hard time trying to decide between either a Refractor or SCT as a good first quality scope. I want to be able to view crisp clear images. With the opportunity to do some, not much, astrophotography in the future. My interests are viewing planets, nebulas, Messier objects, and comets. I am also somewhat limited in space, so a Dob is out of the question for now. I have been looking at the Orion SkyView Pro 120mm EQ refractor, as well as the Astroview 120mm ST EQ refractor vs the Meade LX 90. A Takahashi is way out of my price range. Looking at spending under $2000.00. What are the advantages of a short tube refractor vs a long tube refractor?. And viewing objects through a Refractor vs a SCT. I'm fairly new to Amatuer Astronomy, but I did take an introductory astronomy course in college. Thanks!.

An 8 inch dob is no more bulky or heavy overall than the Orion SkyView Pro 120mm EQ refractor with the equatorial mount and tripod. Assembled, the dob takes up less floor space. An 8 inch dob also weighs considerably less than an LX-90, and again, assembled, takes up less floor space. For transport, the dob tube will fit across the back seat of even a compact car.

There are good reasons to go with the refractor and SCT (tracking and astrophotography), but for bulk and weight the dob has the advantage, IMO.

I own an 8" SCT, a 4" APO refractor, and a 6" achromat refractor. I would say the best all around scope is the 8" SCT. It is very close to the refractors when viewing the planets and is much better on deep sky objects. It also tracks nicely which is crucial for planetary viewing and photgraphy, although I am strictly a visual observer.

I suggest you find an astronomy club nearby and try to attend a star party. People will let you look through their scopes and you can decide which view you like best.

Folks here will give you great advice, but it will conflict, and you may end up more confused than enlightened.

p.s. I bought a small refractor first, then an 8" SCT. They are different, but I like them both.

The best advice that you have received on this list has been basically "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY" There is just no substitute for hands on experience and the subjective factor. Knowing the in's and out's of the different scope designs is important but it still all boils down to that feeling you will get when you experience the right one. Heck this is starting to sound positively pornographic. I'm outa here.
