The 15" Obsession should work great on the planets and provide access to thousands of deep space objects. My AP 130 f/8 wouldn't come close to your views. I'd be more concerned that chair is going to fold up underneath you and your going to fall :-) Martin

Your 15" Obsession should do an awesome job on planets... 8)
I doubt very much you'll be able to match/beat your scope with a 5"/6" refractor...

I suspect that what you have is primarily more of a desire to buy another telescope than a desire to see the planets better. Nothing wrong with that; we all get those feelings from time to time. Your Obsession should be an excellent planetary scope, and should out-perform any 5" scope. Concentrate on having it extremely well collimated. That makes a big difference. I have also found that if you have tracking for your scope, you will be able to see a lot more details.

Hello Refet,

I was away, so I got onto this thread late. Before investing in a 5-6" refractor, try an off-axis aperture mask with your Obsession. (Fit a piece of cardboard over the mirror box, for example.) If your seconday's diameter is 3", you should be able to create a 6" unobstructed aperture with perfect achromatism.

Additionally your eyepieces will have more eye relief. But more important, you will be able to compare the different views for no cost.

My two cents.
