I was thinking of picking up a smaller newt again, I have a Vixen ed80sf refractor which I really love.I really enjoy small telescopes.I decided that a 5 inch Newt might be just the thing for me to get next. I have read some nice reviews of both the orion 130 and 130ST but have been unable to find any on the Vixen 135. pros and cons of each? I know that the Vixen is almost twice the cost as the Orions. How much nicer are the Vixens?

What I know, the public does not approve, and what is approved, I know to be error.

Never seen the Vixen but I do have the Orion 130ST. My guess is the Vixen is nicer around the edges. The Orion is like most Orion/Synta Newtonians, good optics at a good price. Like most Synta scopes, I think the focuser is the main weak point. Of course if you are buying the entire scope and mount, IMHO, the EQ-2 is too small for this OTA, I have mine on an EQ-3 with Super Polaris wooden legs. Getting the most out of an F5 scope requires a solid mount that allows real time focusing.
