someone locally is selling an older dhq 12.5 dob
he says its about 7 years old
all original
not split tube type
how does this compare with some of the newer scopes

Should be a fine scope, or at least a fine mirror. The older Discovery scopes have a better reputation, from speaking with other Discovery owners at star parties.

Compared to a new scope, you dont have to wait a year, and suffer broken delivery promises, communication breakdowns, and generally poor customer service. And you will save some $$$. Check the review in Starware 4.

John
12.5 Discovery 2002 model. A very fine scope.

The DHQ models used a particle board base instead of the better birch plywood. They also used smaller altitude bearing. And in the smaller sizes they used plate glass ra wther than pyrex for the mirrors. So, there could be significant differences depending on how old it really is and what model it really is.

I am not sure that Discovery ever had a 12.5 inch that was designated the DHQ but they certainly had older models that were not the PDHQ's. Some of the oldest ones had particle board mirror cells. Here's a photo of my old Discovery 12.5 inch F/4.06 as it looked when I first bought it... This was from the era when Discoveryas building scopes for Orion and Celestron.

If you had a photo of this scope it would be a help. I think there are important improvements between the DHQ's and the PDHQs that significantly affect the worth of the scope.
