Wave 150i mount

I am new for astronomy. I just bought a mount Wave 150i and a used 8" Meade SCT telescope. In the manual of the mount it says I need to do polar alignment every time I set up the telescope. I want to use EQ mode to tract the stars. I wonder if I can use EQ mode to do polar alignment, or do I have to use Altaz mode for a polar alignment?
