Keep 27 Panoptic or buy Nagler 22 or 26?

I am thinking of purchasing a 22 or 26 Nagler to replace a 27 Panoptic and would like some comments on the eyepieces. I don't think I can go wrong on either, but would like to hear some first hand reports.

Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of inert facts.

Michael - I've owned both and I'm certain that you would be pleased with either one. If you switch from the 27mm to the 22mm your true field will remain about the same size although the apparent field will be 20% wider. Of course you will get a higher magnification and a darker sky background.

If you switch to the 26 there will be a slight increase in magnification and in field darkness but the the true field width will be 15% wider and the total field area will be 32% larger. And, like the 22mm Nagler, the apparent field will be 20% wider.

So the question is why do you want to switch from the 27mm Panoptic? If you want a higher power then go for the 22mm Nagler, if you want a larger true field then go for the 26mm.

You didn't mention what scope you use. My 22 Nagler in my 10" dob was a coma hog. Had to get a Paracorr. The outer 20-30% of the field was dashes--- not stars ***. Paracorr solved the problem, but then I had almost $600 between the 22 and the Paracorr. I sold both.
