I read somewhere-don't remember where-that the Axiom series of eyepieces is not very compatible with the "faster" scopes. Can someone verify that these are not a good choice for f/5optics?

Axioms will not work very well in fast scopes due to off axis aberrations. On-axis views will be very sharp.
I barlow my 23mm axiom in my 16" f4.5 dob and it helps a lot but if you're looking at a DSO, such as the swan nebula, you can use it without the barlow without noticing too much edge distortion. On the other hand, if you're using it to view an open star cluster, use the barlow or you are in for a lot of edge aberrations.
