Hello all,
I`ve seen forums on this before but couldn`t find them again.I need to regrease my EQ5 mount to drive better in the Canadian cold (winter doesn`t look like it`s leaving anytime soon).I will use the "super lube grease" with or without teflon I don`t know but what is a good solvent to remove the old grease(if you can call it that)? It`s a year old and hasn`t been touched before.

Thanks for any replies,
Brian

Search for AstronomyBoy.Com for the main articles on regreasing.

As for what kind of grease, I'll leave to others. I don't have a lot of experience in the cold.

Brian,
You can probably use mineral spirits and an old toothbrush to remove the old grease. I'd recommend a higher quality grease for the re-lubing though. I've used the Super Lube stuff and it seems to break down fairly easily. Anyway, weather is nice here in Ottawa at the moment, so maybe warmer weather is on the way smile
Cheers!

Hi Brian, Probably, any fresh grease you would use, regardless of brand-make-type would be much better than what's probably on-in that mount right now. Full synthetics should be of a better quality, and have a better temperature range to boot. Solvents to use would be mineral spirits as another has mentioned, and naptha, paint thinner, turpentine, and even gasoline will work. Small brushes, and clean rags should be used. Upon dis-assembly, note how all parts come apart, so you won't have any trouble on re-assembly, and all should go well. Mark

Hi Brian

i was a bicycle mechanic for several years, and the best degreaser i came across was Simple Green. it's labeled as an "all purpose cleaner" but it does a great job as a degreaser when used full strength. as a bonus it's also non-toxic and biodegradable. you can pick it up at Canadian Tire.
