OK To Use Solar Eclipse Glasses To View Sun?

Hi All,

Wow, sun spot visible with a naked but filtered eye!

I don't have any solar filters. However, I do have the solar eclipse 'glasses' that came with either Sky & Telescope or Astronomy magazine (there were lead articles on solar eclipses). Is it absolutely safe for me to look at the sun with these "filter glasses?"

What the best time to look for the sun's spots?

Thanks for your comments.

Yes those are safe and now is the time to use them as the sun has two large spot groups on it.

The glasses that came with Astronomy or Sky & Telescope are perfectly safe. A good alternative, for folks who don't have such glasses handy, is to visit your local welding supply store and pick up a shade 14 welder's glass.

Yes, they are safe to use.

However,

Always check any solar filter for leaks before use.

And never use these glasses with any optical aid (like binoculars or telescopes). YOu may wear them "naked eye," but not hold up your binoculars in front of them. ANd do not put them over a telescope's eyepiece and look through them.
