Well, didn't think I'd see this, but there's now a "Premium" to be paid for an Orion scope. There's an Orion 80ED up for sale on Amart that has a $28 premium so that you can buy it NOW!
Move over AP...

It says: "never mounted" but nothing about "never looked through". Of course I can't know, but it sounds like he bought two and is keeping the one he prefers. Simply put: you might be paying a $28 premium for the scope that lost the comparison.

Why doesn't he just return it? No, that would represent a loss in shipping charges, much less the $28 premium.

I'll take the one he prefers more, after he mounts it and looks through it, of course. If you get a lemmon, you bought it second hand and, as far as I know, have no return privileges. Why would I pay $28 extra for that? AP, TMB, etc. don't ship lemmons, but Orion and the 80ED have no such track record.

P.S. And the reason for shipping: "...bought two, one to keep and one extra." Why would you buy "one extra" except to compare and keep the better of the two?

I saw one for $450. That's not really a premium now.

They are now $499 new from Orion.

Orion has had such huge demand, they are raising prices. The Catalog says $429, but try and order one for that. smile
