I just got raped (a bill) for shipping a diagonal to Italy. I sold it for $100 and the shipping came to $69.32. I was given a quote of $22 by the pack and ship office. Any ideas how to resonable ship items overseas? I am not shipping anything outside CONUS again, unless I can find a cheaper alternative.

For what it's worth, I live in Australia, and just had some items delivered here by USPS surface from America. The price was very low, but on the other hand delivery took over four months. An arthritic snail could have moved faster! Fortunately I was in no hurry for the goods, but since this was my first dealing with an Astromarter to say I was becoming anxious would be an understatement.
Other services (FedEx and UPS) would have made the goods prohibitively costly. And when I compare USPS with the British equivalent, the Royal Mail, I see what a bargain you have in USPS.
At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.
Use USPS if you can. Surface is not the only transport method. Whether it gets there in two days or four doesn't really matter much in the great scheme of things.
