I want to upgrade the focuser on my Dob, and would like some comments on what is available out there. Here are the ones I know of:

JMI NGF DX1
MoonLite Dual Rate Crayford Focuser
Starlight Instruments Feathertouch Focuser

I have used the JMI Monorail (reverse crayford) and it is, IMHO, one of the best bargains out there. For under a 100.00 it is a terrific upgrade on most any scope.
I also have a Moonlight with the fine focus option on a 10" dob and it is extremely nice but over twice the price. The Feathertouch is also extremely smooth and well crafted, it will depend primarily on how much you are willing to spend.

Peter,

I recently replaced the stock R&P focuser on my Parks Newtonian with a used Moonlite focuser (a slightly older model with 3:1 belt drive reduction purchased on Astromart). I have been quite impressed with the smoothness and precision of it. I was also impressed with the service I got when I ordered a curved base adapter and extension tube for it from moonlite, they were very helpful. I used it last night and also used the club's dob with a JMI DX2 and it seemed to me that the Moonlite was much smoother (the DX2 was installed new just a couple months ago). One thing I have heard but I have not checked myself is that the JMI requires a large hole for the drawtube, which can make it difficult to change focusers later. I have also used a club member's Kineoptics helical crayford which was very nice, a good option if you want a really low profile focuser.
