Anybody aware of a National or Regional museums dedicated to Astronomy (or an initiative to start one) to preserve the historical artifacts and technology affiliated with the Science/Hobby ect? Most Astronomy technology I have seen in museums tends to be in Aerospace forums..given the proliferation of observatories as well as Amateur equipment would sure be nice to see a museum whose primary focus is preservation of Astronomical history...

Hey Scott,
I agree with your idea for a place to bring together ALL the great successes and technical advances of Astronomy. Amature as well as Professional stepping stones.
There is Hall of Fame places everywhere,Museums for this and that, but not one dedicated truely to Astronomy and exspecially to Amatures.
Question is, where would you put it, how would it be supported, and ideas how it can serve the many interest of all of us who love veiwing the sky ?

Im sure you as well as many others have thought of this for many years, what do you think?

Scott: Check out the American Museum of Natural History in New York City (Hayden Planetarium), the Griffith Planetarium here in Los Angeles (currently in the process of a major renovation/rebuilding), the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia (Fels Planetarium), and the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum in Chicago. There are many other such museums with significant exhibits relating to astronomy, whether or not they also have exhibits on space exploration and/or natural sciences other than astronomy. Also several major astronomical observatories have museums for visitors and tourists.
