I am selling my beloved Obsession 20 that I purchased new in 2005. Serial number 1156.
This scope has a Galaxy mirror which has performed superbly. I had it recoated 5 years ago by Paul at Spectrum Coatings....with his best reflectivity coating....which was a considerable upgrade over earlier coating. Even my observing buddies noticed the increased contrast and detail in nebulae especially. Seeing was believing. The coating is still in great shape and Paul will tell you that his coatings do last. I have proven that out. there are a couple of small scuffs on opposite edges from where I rubbed the edge when removing for cleaning, but its inconsequential. This f/5 mirror is great with deep sky, and also blows refractors away on nights of steady seeing.
The drive system is the Servocat Generation 1. Gary at Stellarcat upgraded the drive so I could use the newest handpad he has offered. That pad is better than the earlier version.....has 4 speeds of slewing....and also allows alignment of the setting circles by hitting the GOTO button. Of course after alignment you use that button to perform GOTO slews.
I upgraded the system from the Argo Navis to the wireless NEXUS DSC from Astrodevices. I find it easier to use than the Argo Navis. No more spinning wheels! You can input an object directly on the keypad and hit enter. The two star alignment process is similar to the Argo Navis, but the Nexus does have GPS and will lock in your location. I have found it very easy to use. It also is more compact and the display is very clear. To go along with this I replaced the original encoders with new 40k S6 type encoders. Also included is the wired connection between the Nexus and the servocat so you can interface an astronomy program like Sky Safari and use a computer to control the telescope. Your computer will connect wirelessly to the DSC and run the telescope.
I had Charlie Starks make some upgrades a number of years ago. The scope has his stalk, with connections for the drives and power and DSC. The Nexus and the wireless receiver and/or the handpad will sit on the shelf. He also installed his powered truss tube system.... no wires!...the secondary mirror has a dew heater on the back which keeps the secondary free from dew in all conditions. Also there is a Thousand Oaks controller mounted on the cage so you can connect dew strips for eyepieces etc. The power cord plug to the powered ground board is also a beefed up large pin connector. Fan installed in mirror cell.
This scope also uses the Starlight Feathertouch focuser, which is the best I think. Telrad included. Original truss cover also, even though the outside has faded a bit, but the inside is still black. I'll include the ladder if you want it!
There are some cosmetic flaws in finish but nothing major. The scope works great as it always has. This is a scope that has been used, as a scope should be. It has spent many nights surveying the skies, and I want it to have a good home.
Why am I selling...? I am trying to jump start a change in career to art, and need extra funds. I am not getting out of astronomy....just refocusing so to speak.
Given the upgrades and the great mirror...I think my price is fair. I paid over 12k for this originally without upgrades. I am also going to sell a full set of Ethos eyepieces but haven't posted them yet. If you like, you can inquire about that if you want them with the scope!!!
Pickup would be great, but I am also willing to drive a good distance if it will get the sale. I could plan to drive maybe up to 500 miles....we could work that out. If using paypal add fees. I am in Enfield, NC.
Give yourself a nice Christmas present and a great scope for the New Year!!! Allen Davis
