I am offering for sale a rather unique Brandon 94 telescope by Vernonscope. What makes this particular scope special is that it was owned and used by Ralph Dakin, of Dakin Barlow fame. A consummate amateur telescope maker, Ralph addressed the "Achille"s heal? of this telescope design, which is the control of stray light. With only one internal baffle and some shiny parts on the inside, stray light can sometimes be a problem with Brandon 94?s, despite the otherwise excellent performance of the Roland Christen-produced objective lens. Ralph added an additional baffle to the telescope and internal flocking. This completely solved the problem with light scatter. Another problem that can afflict the Brandon 94 is that the cemented triplet objective can, over time, become delaminated. When I first received the telescope I immediately saw that this was happening to the lens on Ralph?s scope. I therefore sent the lens this past March to Astro-Physics for repair. Roland de-cemented the lens, cleaned it, then reassembled it, only this time oil-spacing the lens. (I've included a photo of the sales order as proof of this servicing.) The lens returned better than new, and there are no worries about further problems due to the lens being cemented. All I can say is that the performance of this particular Brandon 94 is awesome due to modifications made to it. The images are tack sharp, with excellent contrast and very little light scatter. Slight false color is seen on very bright objects, but this is inherent in the design of the Brandon 94 objective, and I didn?t find it objectionable.

The optical tube does show some signs of use. There are two long scratches on the underside of the telescope that are hidden by the cradle when in use. Also, there is some paint loss on the end of the dew shield, presumably from using a tight-fitting solar filter with the scope.

Included with the telescope is a very nice equatorial mount that was made by Nehon Seiko, the same company that made Unitron telescopes. It is essentially a Unitron 142 mount, slightly modified for use with the Brandon 94. The mount has very smooth motions and is in overall excellent condition. There is one paint chip, as shown in one of the photos. Also, the set screw for the declination setting circle is missing, but this does not impact the usefulness of the circle. The tripod and tripod tray are in very good condition. The mount comes with an AC clock drive that works well.
