Consisting of 6.59 acres, the property is bordered on one side by the El Rito Creek, and on two sides by Carson National Forest. A roll-off roof observatory sits on the north end of the property with deep-sky viewing on the many clear dry nights of the northern New Mexico high desert. (36.362083, -106.212472, 170 Canyon Road, El Rito, New Mexico) The house is near Georgia O'Keefe country -- Abiquiu, Chama River, Plaza Blanca, Cerro Pedernal, and Ghost Ranch. Both Taos and Santa Fe are an hour's drive.
The lodge style house is approximately 3000 square feet in size, all in one level except for one step into the kitchen. There is a large great room with fireplace, a family room with fireplace, three bedrooms (one with a fireplace), two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a large pantry/storage area.
The house is heated both by a combination of propane (wall heaters in the two larger bedrooms and radiant floor heating in the great and family rooms) and electricity (heaters in the bathrooms and third bedroom). The roof houses the collector panels for a 4kw solar array which feeds a grid-tie system with a 4 hour battery backup. This ensures continuous electrical power even during nights, cloudy days, or power outages. The home is served by a 50Mb fibre optic internet connection and DirecTV.
The roll-off roof observatory is also available. There is a pier-mounted Celestron CGEM 1100 with
- a Canon-camera mount,
- a Telrad,
- a finder scope
- a fcusb from shoestring astronomy
- a motofocus,
- a Celestron off-axis guider with various adapters
- an SBIG st-i as an autoguider
- a selection of 2 inch eye pieces (40, 32, 26 and 18mm) and filters (including variable-polarizing and narrowband o-iii filters.)
It is powered by a small solar array with DC and AC outputs (12-volt). There is also an 8" collapsible Dobsonian.
We measured the SQM on 19 May 2017 at 10 pm at 21.75.
