NIKON 4” ED APO REFRACTOR ON NIKON EQ MOUNT
Nikon stopped making these fine telescopes in 1991 and they were never
imported into the US so they are very rare. The rugged 100mm F12
(1200mmFL) OTA is superbly crafted and the typically outstanding Nikon doublet ED glass, gives stunning, color-free images, Ed Ting says" I've seen reflectors
with more color" (see review at www.scopereviews.com) "it is right up there with Tak and AP, it perhaps preforms a bit better.” This is the best planetary scope around bar-none. I have viewed the moon and planets at 400x in moderately good seeing and it is still tack sharp, crater rims and central peaks jump out at you. (yes that is 100x per inch of aperture, and I wouldn’t have believed it had I not seen it myself). It gives pinpoint star images and is great for doublestar viewing as well as deepsky. OTA comes on Sturdy, vibration-free Nikon Pier EQ-mount, the EQ head is a bit stouter than a Losmandy G11. Includes dual drives with metal hand controller box (no plastic here). Also manual slo-mo controls on both axis. The counter weight shaft is threaded so the weight can’t slide off on your toes. Other features include, large focusing knobs, a graduated draw tube (in inches), dew cap, and a really cool 8x50 green illuminated-reticle finder. Cost of OTA alone was about $4200 on the west coast in 1991, if you could get one, (so figure in 10 years of inflation). Even rarer than the scope, I have an English language instruction manual ( photo copy ). Scope is .976 EP format but 2” adapters are available.
