Late model Vixen ED80S apochromatic refractor. This is one of the finest 80mm visual instruments made. Its f/9 (720mm focal length) optical system gives superior color correction compared with faster ED lenses. In side by side tests against my Vixen 80mm fluorite, it’s hard to see any difference. In star tests and Ronchi tests, the optical figure is excellent. This scope is only about a year old and looks like new. It is very little used and the glass has not even needed a dust-off. The focuser is smooth and the standard 6x30 finder has a dovetail mount. It accepts 1.25” eyepieces, but a 2” adaptor can be installed (not included). This one will benefit from better quality accessories.
This classic Vixen Polaris mount has mahogany legs; maximum length 54”. These legs look substantially heavier than others I’ve seen and are finished in a darker stain. Vibration suppression with these legs is superior to the new GP mount; damping time for this scope is less than one second. It also has the Celestron MD-CG4 motor drive on the RA axis. It has a 6 volt battery pack and slews at 8x or 2x drive speed. It has the optional polar axis alignment finder scope. With this counterweight it can carry a larger instrument, such as a 4” refractor. The DEC axis has an extension slow motion control knob. The finish on the equatorial head is still excellent; there a few scuff marks on the counterweight. The mount rings are home made; light but steady. High power lunar/planetary viewing is a pleasure with this superior mount.
Just add a diagonal and eyepieces and start observing. I would like to sell as a package, but will consider separate offers.
