Title: Analemma at Ancient Nemea
Submitted On: 1/7/2004
Photographer: Anthony Ayiomamitis
Equipment Used: Baader Solar Filter (ND5.0)

The motion of the sun across our local skies when viewed at the same time of each day during the course of the year. When the sun is photographed at regular intervals during twelve consecutive months, a figure-8 double loop called an analemma is noted which is due to the tilt in the axis of rotation as well as the elliptical nature of our planet's orbit.

The above analemma was imaged as a multi-exposure on a single piece of film between January and December, 2003. It represents the third analemma (as of Jan 7/04) by the author and only the tenth analemma in existence anywhere. As noted in S&T (Dec/2003 issue), more men have walked on the moon than have successfully produced the analemma.

Details: Canon A-1, Canon FD 24 mm/f2.8 lens, Fuji Superia 100, 1/30th sec, Baader solar filter (ND5.0).
