This is really a strange business.
I thought I had heard it all until I got a call from Bob in Canada last week. When I get an order from one customer for 2 identical Series IV 'Stiletto' focusing units, it usually means they are either going to give me a hot credit card number from Singapore, or have been looking at the Moon far too long without a filter. But Bob turned out to be different. He happened to be an engineer and machinist, and had been doing astrophotography since the Mercury flights in the 60's. He had a chance to use a Series IV focuser borrowed from a friend and was quite excited on the phone:
"This really is a remarkable device," he said, "and I am going to
put one of them away unopened in the closet for posterity. Some
day it really may go way up in value. I want to order two of them."
At first I was pretty flattered and glad to make the sale. But after he hung up and the order went out, it suddenly dawned on me that nothing becomes a collectible until they are no longer made, or until the inventor dies. And in that one sobering moment, I decided I did not want to be another Andy Warhol. And I do not want you to become a gadget collector.
The Series IV 'Stiletto' is made to be used. It will provide precise
focus for any 35mm, CCD, or Digital SLR in seconds so that you can produce some excellent astrophotos. Your pictures are what should become the family collectibles and passed along to your great-great-grandchildren. And that is one reason the proximity of Mars is so important to so many peope taking pictures this month.
