I've had tons of fun with my LX50 and Magellan II, but now I've got the bug for long-exposure astrophotography and I've switched the OTA to an LX200 mount so I can control the scope with a laptop.
The LX50 mount is great for short-exposure work (Moon, planets, and the brighter DSOs). Because of the inevitable periodic error, you'll need an off-axis or auto-guider for exposures longer than a couple of minutes.
The Magellan II digital setting circles will guide you to thousands of deep sky objects with pinpoint accuracy when properly polar-aligned. This one has been upgraded to software version 2.5, but it's the version that still allows you to control the frequency (essential for perfect tracking).
I have modified the LX50's original power input to a robust automotive 12v plug (see picture) and eliminated the AA battery holder (you can't run the Magellan II on AAs anyway). I also bypassed the stock power input socket -- it's still there, but not functional. I did this because the original power setup was prone to sudden 'resets'. The current (pardon the pun) setup has never failed me in two years of operation.
