This flip mirror enables you to quickly switch between a camera and a visual eyepiece. Meade has long since discontinued these and they are only available on the secondhand market. This one is in excellent condition.
A flip-mirror system facilitates focus alignment between the observing and imaging paths. To focus for imaging, you flip the mirror to the "up" position to allow the light to pass straight through from the telescope to the imaging sensor. To focus for viewing, you turn the mirror down to switch the light path to 90 degrees so that it goes to the viewing eyepiece. You achieve precise focusing to the eyepiece by using the helical focusing threads on the viewport. It helps to use an illuminated reticle eyepiece.
Please note that the Meade #647 was designed for use with Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes and there is no assurance that they would work with any other telescope design.
