Carl Zeiss Winkel GF 625 Research Microscope

Trinocular • Brightfield • Phase Contrast • Polarization Configuration • Original Zeiss Transformer • c.1954–1960

Offered for sale is an exceptional and increasingly difficult-to-find Carl Zeiss Winkel GF 625 research microscope, manufactured in West Germany during the golden age of Zeiss optical engineering. This is not a student microscope or routine laboratory instrument—it is a professional research platform configured for brightfield microscopy, phase contrast microscopy, photomicrography, and polarized-light applications.

This microscope remains remarkably complete and retains its original Zeiss optical and illumination systems, including the original Zeiss transformer, trinocular observation head, mechanical stage, and specialized condenser assembly.

The microscope powers on properly, illuminates correctly, and presents exceptionally well for a scientific instrument approaching seventy years of age.

Configuration

Microscope Stand

  • Carl Zeiss Winkel GF 625
  • West Germany
  • Research-grade laboratory microscope
  • Heavy cast-metal construction
  • Integrated transmitted-light illumination
  • Coaxial coarse and fine focus

Why This Configuration Is Valuable

This is not a basic student microscope.

Your microscope includes:

 Plan-corrected optics
 Phase-contrast capability (25x PH2 objective)
 Research-grade Zeiss/Winkel objectives
 German-made optics
 Wide magnification range (2.5x–40x)
Polarization accessories (from your earlier photos)

Condenser System

The microscope is equipped with a specialized Zeiss condenser assembly featuring:

  • Centering adjustments
  • Phase contrast capability
  • Polarization-related components
  • Precision optical alignment controls

This condenser configuration exceeds the standard brightfield equipment originally supplied with many GF 625 microscopes.

Illumination System

Included is the original: Carl Zeiss Transformer

Type 392542

Specifications:

  • 110–240 Volt input
  • Multiple output selections
  • 15 VA rating
  • Original Zeiss manufacture
  • Powers microscope illumination correctly

Illumination has been tested and is functioning.

Polarization & Research Features

Based upon the installed optical components and trinocular configuration, this microscope appears configured for:

 Brightfield microscopy

 Phase-contrast microscopy

 Photomicrography

 Polarized-light microscopy

 Research and teaching applications

 Mineralogical and materials examination

 Biological microscopy

This microscope presents exceptionally well for its age. The original black enamel finish remains deep and glossy with only minor handling marks. It has the appearance of a laboratory instrument that was professionally used and carefully maintained rather than heavily abused in an industrial setting.

Body and Stand

  • No visible cracks, breaks, or repairs.
  • Paint finish remains attractive with good gloss.
  • Minor cosmetic wear consistent with normal laboratory use.
  • Zeiss logo remains intact and clearly visible.
  • Cast components appear straight and undamaged.

Trinocular Head

  • Trinocular phototube is present and complete.
  • Binocular viewing head appears clean and complete.
  • Interpupillary adjustment scales are intact.
  • No obvious dents or impact damage observed.

Objectives

  • Four original Zeiss / Zeiss Winkel objectives installed.
  • Engravings are sharp and fully legible.
  • Chrome surfaces remain bright.
  • No visible chips or cracks noted in the optics.
  • Objective set appears complete and well matched.

Mechanical Stage

  • Mechanical stage is complete.
  • X-Y controls are present.
  • Vernier scales remain legible.
  • Slide holder assembly is intact.
  • Stage finish shows minimal wear compared to most examples.

Focus Controls

  • Coarse and fine focus knobs appear complete.
  • No visible corrosion.
  • Knurled surfaces remain sharp and clean.

Condenser Assembly

  • Condenser and iris assembly present.
  • Centering controls appear complete.
  • Components show normal age-related wear only.

Mechanical Appearance: Very Good to Excellent

Optical Appearance: Very Good to Excellent

Display Value: Excellent

Condition Statement

Equipment originates from the collection of a retired physicist and longtime scientific instrument enthusiast. The microscope shows the careful handling and storage expected from professionally maintained laboratory equipment. An outstanding collector-grade example suitable for display, restoration, research, or advanced microscopy use.

From these photos alone, I would comfortably call it collector-grade cosmetic condition, which is a major selling point for your listing.

Physical Condition

For a research microscope produced during the 1950s, condition is impressive.

  • Original factory finish
  • New replacement bulbs (2 Sets)
  • Excellent cosmetic presentation
  • Focus controls operate smoothly
  • Mechanical stage present
  • Illumination functioning
  • Original Zeiss markings intact
  • Original transformer included
  • Original period GF 625 documentation included

Please examine photographs carefully as they form part of the description.

Historical Significance

Carl Zeiss Winkel microscopes from this era represent some of the finest optical instruments produced during the post-war rebuilding of German scientific manufacturing. Instruments equipped with trinocular heads, phase contrast systems, and polarization accessories are substantially less common than standard educational versions and are sought by collectors, microscopists, universities, and vintage scientific instrument enthusiasts.

Collector Notes

Finding a complete GF 625 is uncommon.

Finding a GF 625 with:

  • Trinocular head
  • Phase contrast optics
  • Polarization capability
  • Original transformer
  • Original documentation

is considerably more difficult.

This microscope represents a genuine mid-century Zeiss research platform and would make an outstanding addition to a serious microscopy collection, university display, research laboratory, or advanced hobbyist setup.
