Astro-Physics 150 mm Super Planetary f/12 (FL 1800) triplet, made in March 1987. This is the finest planetary scope that one could ask for; in side-by-side observing, it has shown more detail on Saturn and Jupiter than a 16 inch Zambuto truss scope of FL 1800, or an AP 152 f/9, or a new AP 140 f/7.5, or a 216 mm f/6 Mak-Newt. I have seen no color with it on any object except Venus, not even on the limb of the Moon. More diffuse objects require a longer EP, but this is not a problem; the Double Cluster is absolutely stunning with a 35 mm Panoptic. Ten minutes after the portrait photo was taken, I was observing Jupiter before dark.

I bought this telescope in May 2006 and am only selling it because I have come into a larger long focal length AP refractor. This is as fine a telescope today as it was when manufactured. The front lens has never been touched. The star test is perfect. Being a used telescope it has a few paint flaws here and there. I have removed two bits of foam from the case so that the telescope can be put away with the rings in place.

It weighs only 18# (plus EP and diagonal) so it is usable with an AP 600; note the positions of the weights. It's the only large refractor I have owned that I can take down alone. Of late I have used it on a Mach 1 and an AP900, both with perfect rigidity.

Your purchase includes the telescope, rings, Losmandy dovetail, original documents, dew shield, end cap and hard case. I have set $5250, which recoups my investment, as a reserve price. I can also provide an AP quick-release bracket for your finder, and/or an AP 80 mm f/10 guidescope and rings. NO PAYPAL but your check is welcomed...

I prefer to meet the buyer at a central location or have the buyer over to observe. I will ship at buyer's expense. If you come here to get it, you may deduct $100 from the sales price.

Here's what the late Tom Back wrote about this telescope: "The August 1986 issue of Sky and Telescope might have been the most impressive ad for its time. Seven apochromatic refractors were listed, and the most impressive was the 6" f/12 Super Planetary for $1540. The ad read: "Our new long focus refractors are designed for the most discriminating Lunar/Planetary observer who does not want any compromise in performance... The Lunar limb and the disks of the planets are sharply outlined against black sky, resembling charcoal drawings." Well, I can tell you that got my interest! I placed an order for one, and at the next AstroFest Telescope Convention, I viewed Jupiter with a 6"f/12 Super Planetary with the one and only Robert Cox, and we were both staggered with the amount of planetary detail. Robert's own words: "The planet presented a clear, sharp edge with a high contrast view of the surface features." "
